Jonathan, the son of the legendary Composer and Co Founder of Indo Jazz Fusion the late John Mayer and Violinist Gillian Mayer, started his Sitar training at a very early age from Clem Alford (the first ever European Sitar player), Pandit Subroto Roychowdhury of Senia Gharana and Wajahat Khan (direct descendent of Mia Tansen the Great Musician, one of the nine jewels in Moghul Court of Emperor Akbar), three prominent names in North Indian Classical Music.
He has gained a B.Mus (Hons) at the Birmingham Conservatoire. His career so far has seen him play with artists such as Dave Stewart, The Smith String Quartet, The Bingham String Quartet, The Dub Pistols, Sarah Brightman and Sir Paul McCartney. He has also recorded a solo album for Cooking Vinyl Records. His playing can also be heard on two Nimbus CD’s and two on FMR.
He has toured extensively with Indo-Jazz Fusion in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia. As a soloist Jonathan has performed all over the world including two very successful tours in India, which were warmly praised by the press. Jonathan is also in demand as a session musician and appears regularly on television and radio
